Kidney Cancer Treatment in Gomti Nagar Extension, Lucknow – Swastik Urology Clinic

Swastik Urology Clinic in Gomti Nagar Extension, Lucknow offers specialised, evidence-based care for patients with kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma) under the supervision of Dr. Aditya Sengar (Urologist). From incidentally detected small kidney masses to locally advanced tumours, we provide personalised treatment plans focused on early diagnosis, organ preservation wherever possible, protection of kidney function and long-term cancer control.

What is Kidney Cancer?

Kidney cancer develops when abnormal cells in the kidney tissue grow uncontrollably and form a tumour. The most common type is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which usually starts in the small tubes (tubules) that filter blood in the kidney.

In early stages, kidney cancer may not cause any obvious symptoms and is often found accidentally during ultrasound or CT scans done for other reasons. As the tumour grows, it can lead to blood in urine, pain or a lump in the flank, or general symptoms like weight loss and fatigue.

Timely detection and treatment are crucial. Localised kidney cancers can often be cured with partial nephrectomy (removing the tumour only) or radical nephrectomy (removing the whole kidney), depending on size and location, while preserving overall kidney function as far as possible.
Blood in Urine (Hematuria)
One of the most important warning signs of kidney cancer is blood in urine. Urine may appear red, pink or cola-coloured, and bleeding may be painless or intermittent. Even a single episode of visible blood in urine should not be ignored and needs prompt evaluation by a urologist.
Flank Pain or Lump in the Side
Dull aching pain in the side of the abdomen or back (flank), a feeling of fullness, heaviness or a palpable mass in the flank region may suggest a kidney tumour, especially when associated with other symptoms. Persistent or unexplained flank pain should always be investigated.
Unexplained Weight Loss, Fever & Fatigue
Many patients with kidney cancer may experience general symptoms such as tiredness, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, low-grade fever or night sweats. These features are non-specific but, when combined with urinary or imaging findings, can point towards kidney cancer and warrant further tests.
High Blood Pressure & Other Associated Changes
Some patients may develop new or worsening high blood pressure, anaemia or, in some cases, high haemoglobin levels due to hormone-like substances produced by the tumour. Swelling of legs or varicocele in adult males can sometimes be associated with kidney tumours that affect blood flow from the kidney.

Causes & Risk Factors for Kidney Cancer

The exact cause of kidney cancer is not always known, but several factors are associated with a higher risk of developing the disease:

1. Smoking – Cigarette smoking significantly increases the risk of renal cell carcinoma. The longer and heavier the smoking, the greater the risk.
2. Obesity & Sedentary Lifestyle – Excess body weight and lack of physical activity are known risk factors for kidney cancer and many other cancers.
3. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) – Long-standing uncontrolled hypertension and some blood pressure medicines may be associated with increased risk.
4. Family History & Genetic Syndromes – Having close relatives with kidney cancer or certain inherited conditions (such as von Hippel–Lindau syndrome) raises the chance of developing kidney tumours.
5. Long-Term Dialysis or Kidney Disease – Patients with chronic kidney disease on prolonged dialysis can develop cysts and tumours in the kidneys.
6. Occupational & Environmental Exposures – Exposure to certain chemicals, heavy metals and solvents has been linked with kidney cancer in some studies.

A complete evaluation with ultrasound, CT or MRI and blood/urine tests helps to confirm the diagnosis, define the stage and plan the most appropriate treatment while safeguarding kidney function.

Kidney Cancer Treatment Options at Swastik Urology Clinic

Treatment choice depends on the size, location, stage and spread of the tumour, as well as your kidney function, age and overall health:

1. Detailed Evaluation & Active Surveillance (Selected Cases)
• Complete clinical evaluation and review of imaging
• Small, incidentally detected tumours in elderly or high-risk patients may be monitored with regular scans in carefully selected situations
• Decision is individualised after detailed discussion of risks and benefits

2. Partial Nephrectomy (Nephron-Sparing Surgery)
• Preferred for many small to medium-sized localised tumours
• Only the tumour with a margin of normal tissue is removed, preserving the rest of the kidney
• Can be performed laparoscopically or by open surgery, depending on tumour complexity

3. Radical Nephrectomy
• Recommended for larger, centrally located or more advanced cancers where nephron-sparing is not safe
• Involves removal of the kidney along with surrounding fat and, if required, nearby lymph nodes
• Performed via laparoscopic or open approach based on tumour and patient factors

4. Multidisciplinary Care & Systemic Therapy Referral
• For advanced or metastatic disease, we coordinate with oncology specialists
• Additional treatments like targeted therapy, immunotherapy or chemotherapy may be advised as per stage and latest guidelines
• Regular follow-up and imaging help in monitoring response and detecting any recurrence early

Your urologist will explain all suitable options and recommend the safest and most effective plan based on your reports, expectations and overall clinical condition.

You should consult a urologist if you notice blood in urine (even a single episode), have persistent flank or back pain, feel a lump or fullness in the side of the abdomen, or if an ultrasound/CT scan has shown a suspicious kidney mass or cyst. Unexplained weight loss, fever, loss of appetite or new uncontrolled high blood pressure along with urinary findings are additional reasons for urgent evaluation.

Is surgery the only treatment for kidney cancer?

For most localised kidney cancers, surgery is the main and most effective treatment. The type of surgery (partial or radical nephrectomy, laparoscopic or open) depends on tumour and patient factors. In selected elderly or high-risk patients with very small tumours, close observation may be considered. In advanced or metastatic disease, additional treatments like targeted therapy or immunotherapy may be needed along with or after surgery. Your urologist will suggest the best approach for your specific situation.

Hospital stay after kidney cancer surgery depends on the type of procedure (laparoscopic or open), your general health and any associated medical conditions. Many patients undergoing laparoscopic partial or radical nephrectomy may require a stay of a few days, while open surgeries or complex cases can need a slightly longer admission. Your urologist will explain the expected duration and recovery milestones before the operation.

Many people live perfectly normal, active lives with a single healthy kidney. After nephrectomy, regular follow-up to monitor kidney function, blood pressure and overall health is important. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding smoking, controlling blood pressure and diabetes and staying hydrated help protect the remaining kidney. At Swastik Urology Clinic, we guide you on long-term care and follow-up after surgery so that you can return to your routine safely and confidently.
